Hypodermic Needle

The hypodermic needle model (also known as the hypodermic-syringe model, transmission-belt model, or magic bullet theory) is a model of communications suggesting that an intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver. Google definition

There was a study to prove this theory known as the Bobo Doll experiment where two groups of children were shown a model acting differently to the Bobo Doll; one group had seen the model acting kindly and the other had seen aggression. Depending on what action the children saw - they repeated the same acts against the doll which shows how they had been influenced by what they had seen.

In the past we have seen similar behavior where propaganda in television and posters throughout the second world war helped portray that Jew's were the enemy and Hitler's Nazism was influencing people in Germany which followed the same principle as the Hypodermic needle model - later in the 60's-90's we saw the same behavior repeated in the cold war between Russia and America trying to deter people from both Capitalism and Communism.

Below are two examples of capitalist and communist propaganda posters.

Capitalist

In recent years we have had a rise in Islamophobia which has been caused by recent influences of the media on how people view terrorism which is because people follow the basic stereo type that people in the Muslim faith are viewed as supporters of terrorism which is the most recent installment of how the Hypodermic model can influence people's mindset.

Todorov's Equilibrium theory

The theory is about simple narrative for a story line or plot. It begins when the equilibrium is first disturbed which is later recognised leading to the fixing of the plot which allows development. This fixes the distribution, once this is complete a new distribution will rise.

We have used Todorov's equilibrium theory in our own piece by starting off with the equilibrium at the start where the friends are sitting together. The disruption will be seeing the post on Facebook which leads to everyone recognising that something has happened.
